LASER VISION CORRECTION AND YOU

Your motivations can be professional or personal, cosmetic or recreational, your expectations are high. They must be realistic so you can fully benefit from a positive outcome. You might be a candidate for laser vision correction if you have at least one of the three following eye conditions also called refractive errors. These are not diseases but result from the shape of your eye.

Nearsightedness the medical word is myopia

  • your eye is too long. Light rays focus in front of the retina
  • your distant vision is blurred
  • it starts during childhood or adolescence. The earlier it starts, the stronger it can become. it progresses till your mid 20's
  • it affects some 30% of the world population
  • it is commonly comprised between -2 and -6 diopters but can reach -30 diopters

unreliable vision
Farsightedness the medical word is hyperopia
  • your eye is too short. Light rays focus behind your retina

  • your close up vision may be blurred
  • it starts during childhood
  • it affects about 60% of the world population
  • it can go up to +8 diopters
  • below +2 or +3 diopters, it may not bother you till your mid '40's because your eye usually has the ability to make up for it

Astigmatism

  • your eye is not perfectly round
  • objects are distorted
  • starts at birth
  • affects nearly 50% of the world population
  • is usually combined with nearsightedness or farsightedness

Presbyopia

  • is related to the aging of the lens
  • is not shape- or size-related but age-related
  • is the progressive loss of the ability to focus
  • begins during the mid-40's
  • affects nearly everyone at some time in life
Nevertheless it needs to be mentioned as ophthalmologists are now doing research on possible surgery.
